This is a preliminary record, please consult the linked accessions. The sub-series consists of records created or maintained by the Mineral Strategy Branch.

The Mineral Strategy Branch, according to a management plan of the department from the early 1990s, provided advice and analysis regarding the contribution of mineral development to regional economic development; designed frameworks for the management of offshore mineral resources; provided information and analysis to assist Canadian mineral exporters and to support Canada's trade negotiations objectives; provided analysis and advice concerning mineral industry-related environmental, labour market and health and safety issues; provided support for the Minister in minerals-related communicatnios activities and other responsibilities; and negotiated and administered cooperative programs or initiatives with the provinces and territories.

In the early 1990s, the Mineral Strategy Branch used the MP2, MP3, and MP7 sections as well as part of the MP8 section of the Mineral Policy Sector's registry system. The subject of files in the MP2 section (e.g., MP2000- 2999 subject numbers) was referred to as both "Policy and Planning" and "Human affairs in the mining industry." The MP3 section, for the MP3000 - 3999 subject numbers, pertained to International Mineral relations. The MP7 section was for Regional mineral development or regional intergovernmental affairs. The MP8 section, at least the subject numbers MP 8500 - 8999, pertained to ocean mining, although sometimes this was contextualized as part of "Resource Supply Analysis" or "Resource Management."

The sub-series currently consists of records from a previous, defunct registry system containing files generated by the Mineral Strategy Branch and its predecessors. The files include agreements, minutes of meetings, financial proposals, background information and correspondence reflecting federal initiatives in mining developments across Canada. These developments occurred in such locations as Nanisivik, James Bay, The Arvik-Polaris, and James Bay.
