The Gilbert family has a long history in photography, with Nathan Gilbert opening his first studio in 1922. His son Albert Gilbert opened his first studio on College Street in Toronto, Ontario, in 1944. During this time, Albert mastered all aspects of portraiture and in 1949 was doing portraits of big band artists such as Frank Sinatra and Duke Ellington. In 1955, Al Glibert moved his studio to Eglinton Avenue West in Toronto, where in the sixties he developed the natural light window style of portraiture, a style and interpretation in wide angle that gained him international recognition. Gilbert was awarded the Order of Canada in 1990 and holds the highest awards and degrees from Canadian, American, and British photographic societies.
