Staatliches Filmarchiv der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik : The Staatliches Filmarchiv der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik (DDR) was founded in 1955 by a decree of the Council of Ministers of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The Soviet government handed over to the GDR government the film collections that had been saved on the territory of the GDR. The film collection of the Staatliches Filmarchiv comprised all kinds of genres of film. They concentrated on collecting and preserving all the films that were produced nationally in the GDR, and all films that were produced in Germany before 1945. A selection for collection was made of foreign films. Besides films, the Staatliches Filmarchiv collected and preserved such materials as are related with the making and the distribution of the films including scripts and their literary sources, censorship and certificate files, film leaflets, handouts, posters, photos, and documents of international film festivals. The collection also included technical devices, particularly recording and reproducing equipment of historical value, and of forerunners of cinematography. The Staatliches Filmarchiv was a full member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF). After German reunification in 1990, the Staatliches Filmarchiv was absorbed by the Bundesarchiv-Filmarchiv (Federal German Archives).

Historique de la conservation :

Some of this material was part of the Canadian Film Institute's (CFI) transfer to the National Archives on May 12, 1975. The CFI received the material from the Staatliches Filmarchiv der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik between 1964 and 1969. The National Archives received the rest of the material from the same donor in 1985.
