Bileski, Andrew, 1903-1992 : Andrew Bileski was born 21 September 1903 at Fish Creek, Saskatchewan to Ukrainian immigrants who had settled on a homestead there in June 1898. He attended high school in Saskatoon, where he was first involved in the cultural activities of the Ukrainian Labour-Farmer Temple Assocation (ULFTA). In 1923 he moved with his family to Trail, B.C. where he finished high school and began work in the COMINCO smelter. He was active in the ULFTA in Trail, and in 1924 joined the Communist Party there. He moved to Winnipeg in 1925. Following a six month cultural course sponsored by the ULFTA he spent twenty-two months in Fort Frances organizing a youth ochestra for the Association. After returning to Winnipeg, Bileski worked as Cultural Director for the ULFTA, teaching Ukrainian and English, and organizing and promoting the activities of the youth division. He was a member of the Workers' Benevolent Association, and joined the Workers-Farmers Co-operative Association (People's Co-operative Limited) at its first meeting in 1928. He married Mary Rohach on 1 May 1929. In the 1930s Bileski worked as an organizer of the Neighbourhood Committees of the Unemployed. He served on the Winnipeg School Board as Trustee for Ward 3 from 1933 to 1940. He was elected City Councillor for Ward 3 for a one-year term in 1939. Bileski was appointed Manager of People's Co-operative Ltd. in 1935, a position he held until his retirement in 1972. In July 1940 Bileski was arrested with other members of the Communist Party by the RCMP under the Defense of Canada Regulations. He was interned for twenty months at Kananaska, Alberta, Petawawa, Ontario and Hull, Quebec. Bileski was again elected to the School Board in 1961, and served for four years. From 1972 to 1982 he organized senior citizens through the Co-ordinating Council of Age and Opportunity Inc. As of 1984 Bileski continued to live with his wife, Mary, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
