The item consists of a letter book of correspondence, 1821-1825, between the Scottish Missionary Society and John J. Carruthers, a missionary working in Imperial Russia. The letter book generally contains full copies of the letters from the Secretary of the Society (Dr. William Brown) but only a precis of the letters from Carruthers. In addition, there is also a small amount of correspondence relating to Prince Alexander Galitzin and Sultan Hatte Ghery, the Society's principal contacts in Russia. Carruthers went with his family to Bakhchisarai in the Crimea to convert and teach the Tartars. The correspondence includes the detailed instructions that the Society gave to him and discusses the progress of his mission, pay arrangements, provision of tracts and books for his work, and philosophical differences.

Carruthers laboured under considerable difficulty because of the hostility of the local Orthodox Church to his mission and the ambivalent attitude of the Russian Government which forbade foreign missionaries from baptizing and preaching. Letters from the Society reveal their extreme displeasure in the early years with his work due to his emphasis of secular education of the Tartars at the expense of spreading the Gospel and Christian principles. Indeed, in one missive signed by all four secretaries they accuse him of an "unchristian and unmissionary spirit" and of being hostile to the advice and counsel of the Directors. In another, however, they complimented him on the creation of a Turkish grammar while encouraging him to master the Tartar language and prepare a similar grammar for it. This strife eased in the latter years of his mission thanks in part to the granting of the "Karass Privileges" by the Russian Government which allowed missionaries to baptize and preach. This period also witnessed some disappointments and misfortunes such as a loss of converts, the seduction of an orphan girl in his care, and the death of one of his children. Carruthers ultimately resigned in September 1825 for reasons that are not fully explained.

Scottish Missionary Society : The Scottish Missionary Society was founded in February 1796 and was known originally as the Edinburgh Missionary Society. It arose from the same missionary impulse to spread Christianity to parts unknown that had inspired the creation of the London Missionary Society in 1795 and the Glasgow Missionary Society in 1796. Though the Scottish Missionary Society was not formally connected with the Church of Scotland, it drew most of its early support from prominent churchmen in Edinburgh and had close connections with the missionary societies in London and Glasgow. Scottish missionaries directed their efforts in the early nineteenth century toward establishing missions in Karass (between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea), Sierra Leone, Kaffraria (in South Africa), Jamaica and India. The secretaries of the Scottish Missionary Society in the early 1820s included William Brown, David Dickson, Joseph Liddle, and George Ross.
