Interview by Jim Green of Nick Buszowski, veteran seaman and former Canadian Seamen's Union (CSU) ship's delegate and union negotiator. Buszowski recalls his first sea voyage to Murmansk in 1942 after signing on with the National Seamen's Union, a company union run by Captain Herbert McMaster. Also recalled are the attacks by the German U-boats on the Allied convoys en route to Europe. Turning to the Park ships operated by the Park Steamship Company, a company owned by the Canadian government, Buszowski describes the deplorable working and living conditions the seamen endured and the many contract violations that precipitated wildcat walkouts by the seamen during World War II. Other topics discussed in the interview are a description of a seaman's life aboard ship and the conflict between Canadian crews and their British officers. A discussion of the structure, and educational programs of the CSU and the various political affiliations of its members rounds out the interivew.
