Fonds consists of photographs including views of England and Wales taken by Allen, ca. 1908-1913; the ship "Victory"; several portraits of Allen, one by Wickens of North Wales, 1906; interior of school chemistry laboratory in North Wales showing Allen with students, ca. 1911; a series of views in what is now Seymour Creek, a watershed area north of Vancouver, B.C., taken by Allen while working with a survey party, and including a survey of the town site of Britannia Beach, B.C. for the Britannia Copper Mine, ca. 1914; one Dufaycolour of cartoon(s), ca. 1910; portrait of Mrs. A.W. Rogers (Dorothea Debell Allen), ca. 1925, by Vanderpant Studios, Vancouver, B.C.; views of Canada including Allen's boat, "00", and islands on the west coast; locales in British Columbia, primarily Vancouver Island, including numerous views of both the lower mainland and west coast; rapportage along the west coast of Vancouver Island, 1937; three photos of Victoria, B.C. by H.U. Knight; and one photo taken by Allen in which H.U. Knight appears. Also included are photos of what appears to be part of the funeral procession for King Edward VII, 1910.

Allen, George Pethybridge, 1876-1960 : George Pethybridge Allen was born 21 August 1876 in England. His boyhood was spent in Cornwall, England, where he was introduced at an early age to photography by his father. He was educated in England, obtaining a science degree at London University. Thereafter, he taught chemistry at a college in North Wales between 1901 and 1912. Allen emigrated to Canada in 1914. During World War I Allen worked as a chemist for the Victoria Chemical Company, British Columbia. Later he was employed as Chief Chemist for Canadian Explosives Ltd., located on James Island near Victoria, B.C., and their successor company, Canadian Industries Ltd. Allen retired from Canadian Industries Ltd. shortly before WWII. He died in Victoria, B.C. on 8 September 1960. Allen is well known for his early work in the field of colour photography.
