Collection consists of a photo album entitled: "A Visit to the Front August 1916". The photographs document Sir Sam Hughes' 1916 tour of the Western Front. They provide a photographic essay of Hughes' tour beginning with shots taken aboard the destroyer carrying him to France, and including his meetings with French government officials; his address to the 1st Canadian Division; review of 1st and 3rd Canadian Infantry Battalions and Canadian Cavalry Brigade; visits to captured enemy trenches and the ruined town of Arras; and an inspection of bayonet practice. Among the dignitaries photographed are Sir John William Maxwell Aitken, Lord Rothermere, and Brigadier-General Seely. Each print bears an identifying caption.

Alexander, S. W : S.W. Alexander, Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), was personal financial secretary/advisor to Sir John William Maxwell Aitken between 1910 and 1914. He was also involved in the translation of the publication entitled Canada in Flanders. Alexander is cited in the various biographies of Lord Beaverbrook and had a prominent career as a journalist and editor within the Beaverbrook "empire".
