Les dipositifs de détection sous-marine sont basés sur l'émission d'une onde sonore et le calcul de la durée de son retour. On s'en sert en mer pour déterminer la profondeur de l'eau ou la proximité des haut-fonds, des écueils, d'autres navires ou obstacles sous-marins. En substituant des ondes radiophoniques à haute fréquence aux ondes sonores, on obtient le "Radar". Par son entremise, les avions peuvent déterminer leur altitude, la position d'une montagne ou d'autres obstacles, ou la présence d'un autre avion dans les airs. Les navires peuvent pénétrer dans un port en plein brouillard ou naviguer de nuit en tout sécurité dans le voisinage d'icebergs.
