Series consists of records created in support of the planning, coordination, policy formulation and resource management of research and development activities at the Department of Communications.

Subjects include the Canadian University Computing Network (CANUNET) and the Communications Technology Satellite (CTS), rural communications, cable television, and various research programs and projects.

Canada. Dept. of Communications. Research Policy and Planning Branch : The Research Policy and Planning Branch (DGRP) was established in 1974-75 under the Research Sector. Its primary responsibilities were to propose overall research policy, to develop the Department of Communications' research program, and to lead projects that could have use in the Canadian telecommunications industry. It carried out its work largely in three areas: research program management, research policy development, and industrial research development.

Following a review of departmental strategic priorities in 1985, the Research Sector was combined with the Technology and Industry Sector to form the Telecommunications and Technology Sector. DGRP responsibilities were spread among various areas of this new sector, though much of the work continued in the Technology Policy and Planning Branch.
