Fort St. James National Historic Site (Canada) : Simon Fraser established Fort St. James, in what is now northern British Columbia, for the North West Company in 1806 as the first post in the territory of the Carrier Indians. In 1821, when the North West and Hudson's Bay Companies merged, the fort became the headquarters of the fur trade district of New Caledonia. Interest in the fort as a historical site emerged after the Second World War. In 1952, the Historic Sites Branch designated Fort St. James as a historic site, commemorating its history with a cairn and a plaque. At the same time, the Fort St. James Historical and Restoration Society lobbied for the restoration of the buildings on the site. In 1965 it was able to attain the title to the three remaining structures on the property for a minimal cost from the Hudson's Bay Company. The company also agreed to lease the land to the society for a dollar a year. The society then approached the Historic Sites Branch for assistance in restoring the buildings. The branch was willing but only if the province contributed half the cost. Although initially unwilling, British Columbia eventually agreed and the fort was reconstructed by Parks Canada in the 1970s to resemble the year 1896.
