Press conference to announce the National Program to Reduce Smoking held by the Canadian Lung Association represented by Blair MacKenzie and Les McDonald; the Canadian Council on Smoking and Health represented by Don Lewis; the Canadian Cancer Society represented by Marsha Barber; the Canadian Medical Association represented by Leroy Fevang; and the Canadian Public Health Association represented by Alan Beerbriar. In opening statements and subsequent question period the following topics are discussed: program objectives and advertising campaign; non-smoking policy in Department of Health and Welfare offices; cost of the program; the mounting incidence of female smoking; Department of Health and Welfare negotiations with Civil Service unions to extend non-smoking practices in the federal government; the cost of caring for victims of smoke-related illnesses; and statistics relating to smoking.
