Series consists of central registry files reflecting the activities of the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation and its predecessor agency during the wartime period and into the period of postwar adjustment. The federal government under its designated agencies - the Wartime Housing Limited and CMHC - sought to fulfil the frenetic demand for housing generated by the war and the eventual civilian transformation of the economy.

Whereas the Wartime Housing Limited was incorporated under the Dominion Companies Act in 1941 primarily for the purpose of constructing houses for war workers, CMHC was established in December 1945 to meet the anticipated demand for housing generated by the return of soldiers to civilian life. CMHC was responsible for administering the National Housing Act, Home Improvement Loans, and Grantee Acts, and for providing discount facilities from loan and mortgage companies. As a result of amendments to the National Housing Act in 1949, which permitted CMHC under the aegis of the federal Minister of Housing to enter into agreements with the provinces for the provision of housing (Section 31A), the Corporation assumed a new set of responsibilities. Henceforth, to cope with these new provincial demands, the Corporation enlarged its functions and decentralized its operations.

For the most part, the files in this series consist of bound volumes of reports and statistical tables outlining the status and progress of the Corporation's program of provincial housing. In addition to the above, there are several files covering the activities of Wartime Housing Limited in the field of wartime housing. More often than not, the volumes are divided according to month and year and provided with a tabular index. The statistical tables themselves are arranged by region, province, and urban centre with aggregate statistical information compiled monthly.

The topics covered in this series include negotiation progress reports, occupancy reports, and sales progress, as well as field activity in mortgage lending and direct loans.
