Oral history interview of David "Snowshoe Kid" Hayes of Ottawa, a former employee of Bell Canada who talks about some of his experiences during his 40 years of service with the company in the Ottawa Valley beginning in 1944 at the age of 16. Hayes began as an assistant to a junior cable splicer in the Ottawa district which covered Hull, Aylmer and parts of both sides of the Valley. Later he relates that he worked on his own when Bell Canada bought out the Gatineau Power and Telephone Company. Hayes talks about being posted in Maniwaki, Quebec, and the difficulties he experienced in servicing the somewhat isolated communities in the Gatineau during the winter when many of the roads in the Gatineau Hills remained unplowed. He recalls that he often travelled by horse and cutter, skis and even snowshoes to install telephones and repair cables in the bush and became known as the "Snowshoe Kid". Also discussed are many harrowing incidents such as coming in contact with bare electic wires, crashing his truck in a washout on a mountainous raod, climbing poles that had rotted and being stalked by wolves from pole to pole in the bush.
