Sub-series consists of records created and/or maintained by the CNR Law Department for the Western Region.

The records mostly concern right of way acquisitions, land sale, disposal of property, claims, investigations, townsite establishment and other matters of a legal nature. The subject files complement the right-of-way files and cover all legal matters with the exception of those dealing with right-of-way. Much of the information within these indexes relate to the legal functions of Canadian Northern or Grand Trunk Pacific Railways before amalgamation with Canadian National.

The subject file index is found in volumes 4725-5211. The Right of Way File index is found in volumes 5212-5563. Additional material in volumes 5564-5566 include legal proceeding documents, a title register, and a legal map of land records.

Cartographic material consists of ca. 221 maps of CN Western Region, Land Survey Dept. record plans [1934-1954], plus 6 leaves of textual records (items #207-429). Areas surveyed include: Fort William and Port Arthur, Winnipeg, Brandon, Regina, Yorkton, Saskatoon, Govel, Prince Albert, Calgary, North Battleford, Red Deer, Edmonton, Kelowna, Kamloops, Vancouver, New Westminster, and Prince Rupert.
