Sub-series consists of records created and/or maintained by the St. John's District Canadian Coast Guard Office. Volume 2025 consists of a file and three bound volumes containing chronologically-arranged applications for certificates of competency as master and mate. The application forms were issued to marine authorities in Newfoundland by the Board of Trade in England, until 1949. At this time, when Newfoundland entered confederation, the responsibility for granting certificates of competency fell to the Canadian Coast Guard of Transport Canada which from there on issued the application forms. Each application form contains the following information: applicant's name, address, date of birth, town, county, certificate required and a "complete list of testimonials and full statement of service from first going to sea or from date of present certificate".

Canadian Coast Guard. St. John's District : Under the auspices of the Canadian Marine Transportation Administration (CMTA), the Canadian Coast Guard is responsible for aids to navigation, including the inspection and maintenance of public wharves. This responsibility is executed through regional and district offices such as the one in St. John's, Newfoundland. The St. John's office closed in the early 1990s.
