The collection consists of maps produced in support of Canadian military operations during the First World War. The majority of maps relate to Canadian campaigns along the western front in northeastern France, although various operations in Belgium and Germany are also represented, as are some non-Canadian peripheral campaigns on the eastern front and the middle east. The maps can be broadly collated into three separate types: topographic series maps, trench series maps, and monographic maps. The first two types of maps were produced in Britain by the Geographical Section, General Staff and were distributed to member nations of the Entrente by the British Corps. The monographic maps are single sheet maps produced in support of a major campaign and have been grouped under their battle heading (Ypres, Festubert, St. Eloi, The Somme, Vimy, Lens, Passchendaele, Cambrai, Amiens, Arras, Valenciennes, Mons, and Namur). Within each battle grouping the maps have been sub-divided accoding to the nature of the information featured: administrative maps, communication and route maps, intelligence maps, artillery maps, trench maps, aerial photographs, and secondary maps.

The collection is organized in four series and relevant sub-series. Please note that the series and sub-series nomenclature used here is the same as that developped in "Jeffrey Murray's Guide to Maps of the First World War". In addition to the maps described in the series below, the latter guide also includes many maps which belong to other collections in LAC holdings and may only be retrieved by using the proper MIKAN entry.

The maps contained in this collection have no specific provenance. The collection was created by the National Archives of Canada. In most cases, the maps were obtained many years ago when records on provenance were not maintained by the National Archives. Other maps in this collection came to the Archives through third parties (usually collectors), or other government departments (such as the Directorate of History, Department of National Defence). Unfortunately, many of these third party sources do not keep accurate records on provenance.
