Interview by Constance Mungall of Ray Thorsteinsson, scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada, about his experiences on geological field trips to the High Arctic in the 1950s with the G.S.C. To begin, Thorsteinsson discusses the weather stations and the airstrips built by the United States in the late 1940s in the Canadian Arctic at Resolute, Eureka, Mould Bay and Alert which served as base operations for the G.S.C. Thorsteinsson recalls the planning, preparations and the highlights of his first G.S.C. scientific trip to Cornwallis Island in the High Arctic in 1950 when the scientific team circumnavigated the island in a 22 foot freighter canoe to examine the geological formation of the rocky outcrops along the island's fiords and to collect samples and gather data for detailed geological maps. One of the highlights of the trip Thorsteinsson remembers is the discovery of the remains and cairns erected by the searchers for Sir John Franklin's lost ships 100 years earlier. Another major topic discussed was the increased exploratory activity in the High Arctic by the late 1950s as a result of the extensive use of the Piper Super Cub aircraft fitted with balloon tires and later helicopters and Honda tricycles - all of which replaced the dependency on canoes and dog sleds.~Other noteworthy topics heard in the interview include the team's discovery of Devon Island, the introduction of the Inuit to the previously uninhabited area near Resolute, the improvements in radio communication, the significance of the lack of fossil formations on Cornwallis, and the indications from rock samples that the area held a high potential for gas and oil deposits.
