Notice descriptive – Détails Fonds/collection :MCNEIL, BillNo d'acquisition :1981-0111Support :Enregistrement sonorePartie :1 of 1Compagnie de production :Bill McNeil (Interviewer)Description :Unedited interview of Oona [O'Day], Extension Service Officer for the Museum of Newfoundland, who talks about the various branches of the museum, some of the museum's noteworthy artifacts and the distinctive wooden buildings in St. John's. [O'Day] explains that the museum has artifacts relating to the extinct Beothuks, the Dorset Eskimo (500 BC to 1500 AD), the tenth-century Norse settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows, the whaling and fishing era of the Europeans from the 15th century onward, and the settlements of the European traders and settlers who drove the Beothuk from their coastal fishing villages. [O'Day] talks about the archaeological work in progress at L'Anse aux Meadows and the continuing search for Viking artifacts in Newfoundland. Other topics discussed by [O'Day] are: a brief history of the museum, plans for its expansion; the distictive wooden buildings in St. John's which were built by ships' carpenters; and the fire of 1894 which destroyed much of St. John's.Langue :EnglishRemarques :Détails de l'inventaire : -
