Edited interview of former CBC broadcaster Harry Boyle about the history of CBC radio and about his career as a CBC producer and manager. Clips from various CBC radio programs are interspersed with interview excerpts.~Boyle talks about: the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission; the CBC; the relationship of public and private radio stations; why Boyle went to work at the CBC in 1942; the CBC as an intellectual mecca and an instrument of social activism; the CBC overseas unit during the Second World War; how CBC informed people about rationing and other aspects of life in wartime; the National Farm Radio Forum; the controversial drama Burlap Bags; the Canadian Association for Adult Education; cooperatives; the Antigonish movement; and a program Boyle developed, CBC Wednesday Night.~Among the radio clips included are excerpts of: sign-ons by CBC correspondents Bill Herbert and Bert Powley; various station identifications; and the introductory sequences of National Farm Radio Forum and CBC Wednesday Night.~Boyle also talks about problems of Canadian broadcasting. He says that broadcasting changed when television came along, because it emphasized entertainment and profitability. In the early days of radio, short-sighted Canadian government officials failed to obtain enough clear-channel frequencies, allowing the Americans to take over frequencies, just like putting "raisins in a pudding". Boyle considers, however, that radio has a bright future as a "portable medium", easy to have in the car or as background music while listeners are doing something else. Boyle concludes the interview by saying that radio can do "short, sharp analysis of what's going on but does so little of it".
