Interview of Dr. Harold Segall, eminent Montreal cardiologist, about his early life and his career. Segall, born in Romania in 1987, talks about: coming to Canada with his family in 1900; the struggle his family had as immigrants trying to make a living in Halifax and later Montreal; his education; his growing up in the French community of Montreal; and the refusal of French schools to accept Jewish students, causing Jewish people to become part of the English community.~Segall then talks about his decision to become a doctor; his graduation from medical school in 1920; his work as a doctor on a ship of the White Star Line in 1918; and his interest in medicine as a means of learning more about human beings.~Next, Segall talks about his specialization in cardiology; the level of knowledge about the heart when he started out as a doctor; his salary; his practice; the Jewish General hospital; the invention of the stethoscope and its impact on cardiology; Canadian breakthroughs in treating heart problems, such as reducing body temperature during surgery; research on congenital heart disease; and his being one of the first doctors to shorten the period of convalescence deemed necessary for heart attack patients.~About the present-day medical profession, Segall talks about advances in medicine, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation; how the mystery seems to have been removed from the doctor's reputation because people think it is modern medicine and surgery that cure people, not doctors. In defence of doctors who seem less compassionate than doctors of the past because they do not make house calls, Segall says doctors can do a lot more for patients in a hospital than they can during house calls.
