Unedited interview of Otto Kelland, former policeman and prison warden in Newfoundland, and since his retirement, a poet, songwriter and renowned model ship builder. Kelland talks about his early life on the Burin Peninsula in Newfoundland and his early interest in making model dories and schooners as a child. Following a discussion of the history, names, and characteristics of the six different ships particular to Newfoundland, Kelland explains the details of his current ship model which will be about six feet in length and require a year to complete. Once the six models are complete, Kelland states that they will be displayed in the Confederation Buildings as a complete set of Newfoundland boats. He explains how he studies photographs and makes copious notes from discussions with skippers to produce detailed drawings of a model. The rough work is begun on a band saw and every detail is finished with a pocketknife, including the cargo. Brass fittings and three coats of paint finish the model. At the conclusion of the interview, Kelland sings the song he wrote "Let Me Fish Off Cape St. Mary's".
