Interview of Hugh Blackwell Evans of Vermillion, Alberta, the last surviving member of the 1898 Southern Cross Expedition to the Antarctic sponsored by the Royal Geographic Society. Evans, one of the 11 team members, was assistant zoologist to Nicholai [Hansen] who died during the expedition and was buried in the Antarctic. Evans recounts some of the highlights and difficulties experienced by the team: being the first expedition ever to winter over in the Antarctic; having their ship trapped in the ice for 40 days; falling into a deep crevice and being rescued by a team member; recording many magnetic and meterological readings; keeping the morale high in spite of the cold, the death of a team member, and the many hardships; and finally, the overland expedition to Duke of York Island when the ship was six weeks late in retrieving them.
