Privy Seals and counterseals of all of the Governors-General of Canada between 1867 and 1959, with the exception of Sir John Young, Baron Lisgar (1868-1872). Included are the seals and in some cases counterseals of Monck (1866-1868), Dufferin (1872-1878), Lorne (1878-1883), Lansdowne (1883-1888), Stanley (1888-1893), Aberdeen (1893-1898), Minto (1898-1904), Grey (1904-1911), Connaight and Strahern (1911-1916), Devonshire (1916-1921), Byng of Vimy (1921-1926), Willingdon (1926-1931), Bessborough (1931-1935), Tweedsmuir (1935-1940), Athlone (1940-1946), Alexander of Tunis (146-1952), and Massey (1952-1959).
These items were previously unaccessioned. Photographs of many of the seals and counterseals had been acquired previously in 1961, and were accessioned as 1961-96, accounting for the confusion between the copies and the actual seals themselves. For a long period of time, these seals were displayed in the Archives Museum..
