Interview with 90 year-old Dr. Hugh MacKinnon who grew up in Lake Ainslie on Cape Breton Island. MacKinnon recalls various anecdotes from his youth including stories about: delivering mail with his brothers in order to save money for university; Dr. Grant of Queen's University who recruited his brothers for the Church; his summer job teaching English to immigrant children in Alberta and Saskatchewan; a cyclone which took the roof off the family home. His memories of his World War I experiences with the 20th Canadian Battalion include details about dressing wounds in the trenches at Vimy Ridge and the Somme and giving soldiers direct blood transfusions with the use of syringes. MacKinnon talks about his shot-put record established at Queen's University and attributes his good health to genetics, abstinence from smoking and alchohol, and eating porridge daily. He tells various anecdotes from his days practising medicine in Cape Breton concerning: the long queues outside his office for alcohol prescriptions during Prohibition; various cases; and difficulties in travelling by horse and sleigh in winter. A discussion of MacKinnon's background touches on such topics as his mothertongue being Gaelic; the arrival of his Scottish ancestors in Cape Breton; the importance of education and religion in his family; and farming and fishing as a boy. Also present during the interview is MacKinnon's wife Alice and interviewer Orest Ulan of CBC, Halifax.
