Interview by Lisa Weintraub of Margaret Van Scoyoc who discusses her work as a nurse during World War II. Van Scoyoc recalls her job as a nurse in Bermuda where she witnessed the military preparations for the impending war. Returning to Montreal, she worked as a nurse at Canada Car and Foundry, a munitions plant where many women worked producing shells for the war effort, and where Van Scoyoc remembers the many fatal accidents and explosions at the plant and the serious burns suffered by those employed in this hazardous work. After joining the Medical Corps in 1942, Van Scoyoc was posted to England to care for the wounded soldiers returning from Italy and later transferred to a hospital in Belgium after D-Day where she worked 13 hour shifts in the operating room. Also discussed is her posting to a mobile hospital unit with the 6th Canadian General Force in Northern Europe until the end of the war and her work at a German prisoner of war camp after the war. Other topics include the hardships the civilians and military endured during the war and the many sacrifices made by women in all walks of life, "the unsung heroes of the Second World War".
