Interview by Lisa Weintraub of Danielle Dionne, long time political activist and trade union organizer and official, who talks about her war work in Montreal and her dedication to the labour movement during World War II. To begin, Dionne discusses her family who emmigrated from France in the 1930s and who she describes as "nonconformists" and "political activists". Dionne recalls her initial contacts with the Communist Party and her job at Defence Industries Limited in Verdun, Quebec where she assembled high precision tools for the production of .303 brass cartridges. Describing the hazardous working conditions at the plant, Dionne recounts her union activities and details of the trade union movement at the time. Among the many topics brought forward in her analysis of the early years of the trade union movement are: the union's "paternalistic attitude" toward female workers; the "anti-French Canadian" feeling in the trade union movement in Quebec; the role of the American unions; the uneasy relationship between the Catholic Church and the union movement in Quebec; and finally, the similarities between the women's movement and the trade union movement.
