Interview of Jeff Wyborn about his experiences as a bush pilot. He talks about: his learning to fly at the Fort William Flying Club in the 1930s; his work as an apprentice engineer there; his work as a pilot flying people to fishing camps and transporting the fish to Sioux Lookout and other places; navigation using maps and landmarks; some flying mishaps; the radio networks operated by the Hudson Bay Company and the Department of Transport; weather reports transmitted to pilots via radio; and transporting Indian and Eskimo tuberculosis patients to the hospital at Moose Factory. Wyborn explains that in his early days as a pilot, the bush pilots flew only during the daytime, using visual flight rules. There were few instruments to aid pilots in navigation. Pilots feared being caught in fog, wind and whiteouts. The interview concludes with Wyborn expressing why flying an airplane is enjoyable.
