This portrait miniature is a posthumous portrait of Alice Walker (1881-1890), who died at the age of nine from diphtheria. It was painted by her father, Horatio Walker (1858-1938) who was well-known in Canada and abroad. She was the only daughter of the artist. It is assumed that her father painted miniatures when he was an apprentice with Toronto's Notman and Fraser studio yet this is the only known miniature by him.

Walker, Horatio, 1858-1938 : Painter. Horatio Walker was born at Listowel, Ontario. He was largely a self-taught artist, but joined the photographic studio of Notman and Fraser in Toronto in 1873, and worked under the artists R.F. Gagen and John A. Fraser. He moved to the United States in 1876, establishing a studio in New York in 1878. He is thought to have studied miniature painting at the Notman studio and in New York. He married in 1883 and settled at Ile d'Orléans, Quebec, and continued to paint. He sent much of his work to New York to be sold. He spent time in Canada, Europe and visited Africa and Russia. He is a well-known painter, renowned for his landscape, habitant and animal scenes in oil and watercolour. He exhibited widely, received numerous awards, and was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1918, and was a founding member of various other art institutes. He died at Ile d'Orléans in 1938.

This miniature was acquired at auction at Sotheby Parke Bernet (Sotheby's Canada), Toronto, Ontario as lot 169. The provenance is Olive and Arthur Pretty, Toronto, Ontario, family descendants of the artist and sitter.
