School children discuss Canada's Centennial: sound of children's voices; in an unidentified group they talk about next year's party and a birthday celebration for Canada; in the Toronto French School, the class sings Frère Jacques, Sur Le Pont d'Avignon and other songs. One child is glad to be in Canada because up here we don't have these hurricanes "and everything". Another remarks that we don't have a population explosion here. Several discuss their favorite subjects with the interviewer, Bruce Rogers. Then they all discuss Expo 67, with one of the children as host-interviewer. Examples of their comments are: "At Expo what language would you speak? "English to my parents but French to the other people" ,"I'd start in French" and "I don't speak until I'm spoken to". In a multi-ethnic, English-speaking school, children put on an Expo skit, with various countries' people describing their ways. An Italian boy tals about the Tower of Pisa and pizza, and later, the Tower of Pizza. Their final advice is to show visitors Niagara Falls in blossom time. Other children from a class that recently visited Fort Henry talk about Canada's early war with the U.S. and about what kind of birthday cake we'll need for 20 million people ("as big as this school" and:"about a thousand cakes"). This class puts on a play, we are told, set in Dawson City's Black Diamond Saloon, for the sub-series IT HAPPENED LIKE THIS. In the cast are David Kelly, Glenn Ruggles, Ona Fletcher, Paul Popovic and the host-signer of the program, Bonnie Dobson. Some Grade 7 and 8 children discuss whether Canada should join the U.S. and what makes Canadians different from other peoples. The host lets the class discuss this alone. The students decide that Canada is well off without riots, and such, but one boy predicts a Depression or war in about 10 years. Bonnie Dobson sings, with class input: Mistress Spond; An Old Sow; and Bayberry Tree. <60mn>
