Interview of Martha Ruoho by Raili Nieminen and Helena Doherty for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. Martha Ruoho was born in Merikarvaja district, Finland on February 27, 1902. She came to Canada on Jan 31, 1925 by ship, and landed at Halifax. She worked as a maid in Finland. Her father left Finland in 1909. He lived in the U.S. at first, but later moved to Canada at start of WWI to avoid having to go to war, and lived in Nipigon. Ruoho worked in a restaurant in Nipigon. She was married in Finland, and left one son there. Her husband did bushwork, and was a member of a Union. The Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC) hall was built in or around 1912. The FOC supported unions, strikers, etc. Nipigon was a predominantly Finnish community then. Jack Kaski directed many plays at the hall. Ruoho acted as prompter for plays. There was a sports group for young members. There was a split between Finnish people in Nipigon; some didn't agree with FOC activities, so they went off on their own. The hall was burned down during WWII, and the Government halted all FOC activities. The Co-op store formerly in Nipigon was built around the same time as the hall. Ruoho held shares in it, as well as in the Thunder Bay Co-op Dairy. <25mn>
