The fonds consists of the manuscripts of John Elliott of London, Ontario. It includes his school copy book from his childhood in Trafalgar township, Ontario, dated 1832. The copy book contains mathematics exercises, including calculations of measures, compound interest, geometrical progression, and vulgar fractions. There is also a letter from John Elliott to Mr. and Mrs. John Courson, dated May 1853, London, with a proposal of marriage for their daughter Priscilla Courson; and an undated, ca. 1850s or 1860s, illustrated Valentine's card to his wife Priscilla Elliott. The fonds also includes a bill of sale for 700 dollars of a "Negro man slave named Alfred, of black complexion" dated 27 March 1852 in Washington County, Kentucky. The vendors were Gordon Schooling, John W. Coleman and Mary L. Coleman, and the buyer was Andrew Yankee. An unconfirmed family oral tradition holds that John Elliott obtained this document from an escaped or freed slave in London, terminus of the underground railway. In addition, there are photocopies (made in 1999) of title pages of selected books from the Elliott family library dating from 1837 to 1895.

Elliott, John, ca. 1819-1903 : John Elliott was born in 1819 or 1820 in Shaw Head, Parish of Beautcastle, Cumberland County, England. He came to Canada in 1827 with his parents who settled in Trafalgar township, Halton County, Ontario. He attended a common school until the age of fifteen when he went to Toronto to serve as an apprentice in the mercantile house of George Stegman to learn the dry goods and grocery business. On the outbreak of the rebellion of 1837, he joined the cavalry and saw active service. During the 1840s he developed commercial interests in Galt and Trafalgar. Elliott moved to London, Ontario in 1850 and established a foundry there which prospered over the next two decades. He expanded his business enterprises into Manitoba, the Northwest Territories and Australia and built an extensive new foundry and agricultural works in London in 1871. At its height in 1885, the foundry in London employed 125 men and his total work force was about 200 in that year.

John Elliott married Priscilla Corson (or Courson) in 1853. She was the third daughter of John Corson of Westminster township, Middlesex County, Ontario. The Elliotts had nine children. John Elliott died 18 November 1903 in London.
