Item is a copy of Professor J.J.R. McLeod's account of the events of 1921-1922. It includes a covering letter from Professor David Campbell of the University of Aberdeen (where McLeod had move in 1928) to Dr. G.E. Hall, President of the University of Western Ontario, upon the former's discovery of the document in McLeod's papers in 1949. The Account itself includes the original summary of September 1922, with a covering letter to Colonel Gooderham dated 20 September 1922, and an addendum dated May 1923; the addendum showed typewritten copies of correspondence between Banting and McLeod, and further elucidation of several points raised from the September 1922 statement.

McLeod, J. J. R., 1874-1935 : Prof. J.J.R. McLeod (1874-1935) was a Professor of Physiology at the University of Toronto. In the summer of 1921, Dr. Frederick Banting and Mr. Charles Best carried out a series of experiments at the University of Toronto which led to the discovery of insulin (a protein hormone secreted by the islets of Langerhans which controls the concentration of glucose in the bloodstream, the absence of which results in diabetes mellitus). On 23 October 1923, the Nobel Assembly awarded the 1923 Nobel Prize for Medicine to Dr. Banting and Prof. J.J.R. McLeod, in whose lab the research was carried out. This decision engendered a great deal of controversy which persists to this day.

Banting decided to share his half of the award with Best, whose contribution had been overlooked by the Nobel Committee, while McLeod announced his intention of sharing his half with J.B. Collip, the biochemist who had joined the team in late 1921 to work on the development of the extract. Opinion was divided as to whether or not McLeod should have been awarded the Prize for work that was carried out in his lab without his direct involvement. A great deal of friction developed between various members of the team, particularly Banting and McLeod; the strain in relations often spilled over onto more public arguing.

In an attempt to defuse the squabbling over the credit for insulin's discovery, Colonel Albert Gooderham, the Chairman of the University's Insulin Committee, asked each of the three main participants to submit typewritten statements of their understanding of the events leading to the discovery of insulin, including the involvement of J.B. Collip (Collip himself was not asked to write, as he had returned to the University of Alberta). Gooderham intended to take the accounts, meet with the three gentlemen and attempt to reconcile them. Unfortunately, such a meeting never took place.
