Diamond, David W, 1948-1988 : David W. Diamond, born on 20 April 1948 in Syracuse, New York, was raised by his adopted parents in Sherburne, New York. After graduating high school in 1966 he spent two years at the University of Denver, Colorado. In April 1968 the Draft Board declared him I-A and in June he was inducted into the United States Army. He spent eight weeks in boot camp at Fort Knox and then ten weeks in training at Fort Sam Houston where he became a Private First Class in the Medical Corps (Combat). In December 1968 shortly before he was due to be shipped out to Vietnam he headed for Canada while on leave. On December 15th, he was officially declared AWOL by the United States Army. He was granted landed immigrant status in Canada in June 1969.

In the fall David enrolled in McGill University. While there he became a friend and protégé of noted author Hugh MacLennan. He graduated in spring 1974 with a B.A. majoring in Art History. During his McGill days he also wrote song lyrics, twelve of which were purchased by Chappell Music Inc. While pursuing an M.A. in American Literature at the University of Montréal he wrote "Synapse: A Deserter's Diary". Shortly after his inauguration in January 1977 President Jimmy Carter introduced an amnesty program for Vietnam War resisters. In September, David reported to the Provisional Deserter Processing Center at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis where he received his discharge under "Other Than Honorable Conditions" for desertion from the U.S. Army and was demoted to Private (E-1). He returned to Canada living for a brief time in Toronto and then moved back home to Sherburne in 1978. After all his appeals to the Army Discharge Review Board failed, he lived in Hollywood 1979-1980. He then returned home to work in the family business. He continued his correspondence with Hugh MacLennan and wrote "Gilda Sage" a comic novel set in Toronto, Sherburne and Los Angeles and an unfinished diary. David died by his own hand in the family home in 1988.
