The fonds consists of records created by Wm. Weller, associates and the government of Upper Canada, and all pertain to the business of conveying the mail. The records consist of two series, correspondence (1843-1852) and agreements (1841-1855). The correspondence is both to and from Wm. Weller and refers to the various routes of mail that he controlled. The agreements series includes various contracts, leases and sales pertaining to the conveyance of the mail. Names associated with the collection include, Charles Clark, Thomas Armstrong, Wilson S. Conger, Henry Count, John David, John Gordonier, Caroline McIntosh, William Soloman, James Walsh, David Weller, and L.R. Weller. The fonds has been listed by series.

Weller, William, 1798-1863 : William Weller (1798-1863) came to Canada from the British Isles with his family in the late 1820's. Residing in Cobourg, he became a stage coach proprietor from 1830 to 1856. Mr. Weller became a prominent person in Cobourg, he was elected mayor three times, chaired The Harbour Commission, was President of Cobourg-Rice Lake Plank Road and Ferry Co. (toll paying road), and organized the International Telegraph Company. Wm. Weller controlled a stage coach empire for twenty-six years. Working out of Cobourg, he became a share holder in several coach lines and secured government mail contracts. In 1830, Weller, established a coachline from York to Prescott and from 1843 to 1848 he had a mail contract for the line connecting Cobourg, Port Hope, and Peterborough. In 1840, the telegraph line from Toronto to Hamilton was created by Wm. Weller. The stage coach proprietor was able to link Toronto to Montreal, Young Street to Holland Landing and Niagara to Hamilton. This mail system lasted until the 1850's when the cheaper and quicker railways replaced the stage coach. Wm. Weller was unable to adapt his business to the new railway mail system. CPA-176

Historique de la conservation :

In 1975, the records were purchased by the National Postal Museum from R. Maresh and Son. The material was maintained by the museum until 1988 when it was transferred to the newly established Canadian Postal Archives.
