The accession consists of 885 original cartoons by freelance Vancouver artist Graham Harrop (b.1944) dating from 1994-1999.
The accession consists of 885 original cartoons dating from 1994-1999, by Graham Harrop (b. 1944), a freelance Vancouver cartoonist. These include 678 strip cartoons from the "Back Bench" series published in the Toronto "Globe and Mail" and 207 other works published in the "Vancouver Sun". In the "Back Bench" series, some of topics/subject matter covered include: business (i.e. small business, the tobacco companies); Canadian nationalism; culture (i.e. art, entertainment, museums); environment (i.e. global warming, "El Nino"); government (i.e. Revenue Canada, taxation); health (i.e. medicine, medical profession); justice (i.e. crime, law enforcement, legal profession, prison system, parole system); military (i.e. armed forces, national defence issues); domestic politics (i.e. Budget, Senate); foreign politics (i.e. Clinton sex scandal, Saddam Hussein); science (i.e. U.S.-Canada Space Program ["Canadarm"]); social issues (i.e. social protest, unemployment); sports (i.e. Olympics, World Series, C.F.L.); and transportation (i.e. airlines, airport security, mail service). The cartoons from the "Vancouver Sun" include: provincial, federal and foreign political issues or events (i.e. the public image of the Glen Clark government, Nanoose Bay seabed expropriation, U.S.-Canada salmon negotiations); local environmental concerns (i.e. B.C. forest industry & anti-logging activists); federal government relations (i.e. transfer payments); Indian land claims and sovereignty (i.e. the Nisga'a agreement), as well as a number of other provincial and municipal issues and topics (i.e. B.C. Ferries rate increase, Vancouver Airport improvement). The material described above complements an earlier accession of cartoons by Graham Harrop which was acquired by the National Archives, in 1994.
