Chicago and Grand Trunk Railway Company : The Chicago and Grand Trunk Railway Company represented the culmination of the Grand Trunk's ambition of connecting the end of its Canadian main line at Sarnia/Port Huron with Chicago. This gave a through line from Chicago through Montreal to Portland, Maine. The Chicago and Grand Trunk Railway Company was incorporated under an agreement dated 7 January 1880, under Articles of Consolidation that amalgamated the North Western Grand Trunk Railway Company (Indiana and Illinois), the North Western Grand Trunk Railway Company (Michigan), the Chicago and North Eastern Railway Company, the Indiana Railway Company and the Michigan Railway Company. The line from Port Huron to Elsdon, Illinois, was 326.79 miles in length and entered Chicago over 3.90 miles of track of the Grand Trunk Junction Railway Company and 4.85 miles of the track of the Chicago and Western Indiana Railway Company.

By 1900 the company was experiencing financial difficulties and in order to settle the floating debt and refinance its operations it was decided to effect a reorganization. On 3 January 1900 foreclosure proceedings were instituted and the property of the Chicago and Grand Trunk Railway Company was acquired by Grand Trunk nominees on 2 November 1900. On 22 November 1900 the property was passed through three nominal corporations to a new company wholly owned by the Grand Trunk, the Grand Trunk Western Railway Company. RG30 General Inventory
