Stratford and Huron Railway Company : The original charter for the Stratford and Huron Railway Company was granted in May 1855 (14 Vic., Cap. 184). No construction of the proposed line from Stratford to Southampton was commenced until 29 March 1873 when the original charter was revived and amended (Statutes of Ontario, 36 Vic., Cap. 87). A total of 105.80 miles of line between Stratford and Wiarton was completed between 1877 and 1882. The line was leased to the Port Dover and Lake Huron Railway Company. In March 1881, the Stratford and Huron Railway Company, the Port Dover and Lake Huron Railway Company and the Georgian Bay and Wellington Railway Company amalgamated (Statutes of Ontario, 41 Vic., Chap. 69) to form the Grand Trunk, Georgian Bay and Lake Erie Railway Company.
