Fonds consists of a research collection, 1852-1951, of 164 Canadian postally-used covers and postage stamps, entitled North Shore and Manitoulin Island Post Offices, bearing various postmarks of communities located in Algoma, Nipissing, Sudbury, Manitoulin Island and other Ontario districts; and miscellaneous research notes relating to the North Shore and Manitoulin Island postal cover collection; and a photograph of the Gore-Bay, Ontario squared-circle steel postage stamp cancellation hammer.

Fonds also contains a postally-used cover addressed to Mr. Thomas Garland, Caledonia Post Office, Ontario, bearing a Providence Bay, Ontario postmark, 12 April 1880. The fonds also contains a private issue photo-postcard bearing a 1908 Gore Bay, Ontario, squared-circle postmark, that depicts a native encampment at Gore Bay, Ontario.

Fonds also contains seven original photographs depicting various scenes of the Dominion Land Survey Party, Peace River, District of Alberta, March 1907-December 1909.

Squirell, Michael J., 1941-1987 : Michael J. Squirell, draftsman, philatelist, was born in Winchester, England, in 1941, and came with his family to Canada in 1947, settling in Lively, Ontario. After a period of service in the Royal Canadian Air Force, he studied drafting at the Provincial Institute of Trades in Toronto, and began working for the International Nickle Co. in 1965. A philatelist since childhood, Canadian Classics, Canadian Postal History in general, and the Postal History of Manitoulin Island in particular, were among his early interests. British Machin heads, 1967 Centennials, fakes and forgeries, duplex and fancy cancels, stampless items, Canadian part-perforates and the U.S., U.N., Great Britain offices abroad were among his later interests. He was an early member of the Postal History Society of Canada and contributed articles and research to the journal of that society; and also belonged to the British North America Philatelic Society, for which he was Librarian; the American Philatelic Society Philatelic Literature Association; the King George VI Collectors' Society; and the Sudbury Stamp Club. Mr. Squirell also wrote for the newletters of the Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie Stamp Club newsletters. National Archives of Canada Philatelic Collection acquisition files.

They were later acquired by the Canadian Postal Archives (and initially included in accession 1989-565)., The seven original photographs depicting various scenes of the Dominion Land Survey Party, Peace River, District of Alberta, March 1907-December 1909 (accession 1992-278 DAP) were acquired from Mr. Squirell by the National Postal Museum (accession number unknown). They were later acquired by the Canadian Postal Archives (and initially included in accession 1989-565)., The postally-used cover addressed to Mr. Thomas Garland, Caledonia Post Office, Ontario, bearing a Providence Bay, Ontario postmark, 12 April 1880 (accession 1993-140 DAP), was acquired from Geo. S. Wegg Limited by Michael J. Squirell. It was later acquired from Mr. Squirell by the National Postal Museum (accession number unknown) and later acquired by the Canadian Postal Archives (and initially included in accession 1989-565)., The private issue photo-postcard bearing a 1908 Gore Bay, Ontario, squared-circle postmark, that depicts a native encampment at Gore Bay, Ontario (accession 1992-099 DAP) was acquired from Mr. Squirell by the National Postal Museum (accession number unknown). It was later acquired by the Canadian Postal Archives (and initially included in accession 1989-565).
