Shortly after the inaugural convention of March 1921, a series of Canadian Authors Association meetings were organized at which branches at Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary, Toronto, and in British Columbia and Alberta were established. To quote former CAA President Charles G.D. Roberts (1927- 1929): "The Branches are the Association and it is upon their healthy activity individually that the usefulness of the Association mainly depends." (Lyn Harrington, "Syllables of Recorded Time", 1981, p. 102). Although the number of CAA branches has waxed and waned over the years, they continue to be instrumental in providing professional support and places for the sharing of ideas and programs within their respective local literary communities. The Branches of the CAA have always been autonomous but have maintained their link with the CAA head office in order to exchange information at the national level.

The contents of this series are divided by provenance into four sub-series: National Office Branch Files, Toronto Branch Files, Sarnia Branch Files, Ottawa Branch Files and Manitoba Branch Files. The files of each sub-series are arranged in chronological order. Containers 20 to 31 and 55 contain photographs.
