The business of the Canadian Authors Association is basically administered by the National Council and the National Executive Committee. The National Council functions as an advisory body which meets at least once a year, usually during the National Convention or Conference. Although the membership profile of the Council has changed somewhat since 1921, its role in making recommendations to the National Executive on any and all matters concerning the Association has remained constant. The National Executive Committee, known simply as the National Executive, is an elected body whose membership has always included the President, the immediate Past President, the Treasurer and the Membership Chair (formerly the Bursar). National Executive elections take place at the Annual General Meeting, held during the National Convention/Conference. It is the National Executive that is responsible for delegating the business of the Association to various officers and Committees, providing for their renumeration, managing, directing and controlling the affairs, funds and property of the association, and arranging for affiliation with other organizations. The National Executive is required to meet at least once a year (forty-eight hours after the Annual General Meeting) and may convene at any other time during the year. On average, the Committee convenes four times annually.

The files in this series are arranged by body (Executive, Council and Annual General) and organized into a single chronological range. Contents vary from single files containing a discrete set of minutes to multiple files containing correspondence, meeting announcements, minute drafts, and other supporting documentation. The series also includes a small number of branch reports, which along with reports of the National President, Secretary Treasurer, Auditor, and Committees, are a requisite submission for the Annual General Meeting. Containers 8 to 10 contain photographs.
