Sluzar, Wolodymyr, 1895-1976 : Wolodymyr Sluzar was born on January 28, 1895 in Chukiv, Bukovyna, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He completed his secondary education in Chernivtsi in 1914 and was drafted into the Austrian Army at the outbreak of the First World War. He attended officers training school. With the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he joined the Ukrainian Army. He was wounded and suffered from typhus. One of his nursing assistants was Leonia Kiziuk whom he later married on January 28, 1920. With the partition of Ukraine, he returned to Bukovyna then under the administration of Romania. He enrolled in University studying commerce and theology. In 1923, he decided to emigrate to Canada. In 1924, he was accepted into the ranks of the clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and was ordained by Archbishop Ioann. For two years, he served several parishes in Saskatchewan and in 1926, he was sent to Montreal to establish the first Ukrainian Orthodox parish in eastern Canada. He was also active in many Ukrainian lay organizations such as the Ukrainian War Veterans League and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. He was also involved with the Avramenko Film Company and the Central Supply and Service Company which provided services to Ukrainian and other street food vendors in Montreal. After the Second World War, he assisted Ukrainian Displaced Persons to settle in Montreal. He corresponded with many Ukrainian community leaders in Canada and abroad. He retired from his position as senior priest in 1972 and he died on December 26, 1976.
