Series documents the administration and operations of the Upper Ottawa Improvement Company/ICO Inc. from its inception through to its decline. Records in the series include administrative correspondence, legal, financial and executive records. These records not only document company administration, but also offer insight into the lives of employees and their families, and the many small communities along the river. Furthermore, the records provide information on the environmental impact of moving logs down the Ottawa, and on the properties, camps, depots and booms operated by the ICO, including Opemican Depot, Fort William, Des Joachims, Culbute, and the Coulonge Chute. Operational timber and marine records detail the quantities of wood moved on the Ottawa River and its tributaries and discuss the technological innovations in the industry. (A subseries dedicated to dormant records reveals information on all aspects of the early history of the company).
