The series consists of contracts that were created by the Ponts Jacques-Cartier et Champlain Inc. (PJC&CI) in order to achieve the construction, renovation, maintenance, and inspection of the Jacques-Cartier and Champlain bridges in Montréal, QC. It also contains records related to the creation of those contracts. The two bridges are classified as 91 (Jacques-Cartier) and 92 (Champlain); however, the two types of records share a common classification scheme thereafter. The most common records found in the accession concern Bridge Construction Contracts (91-4 and 92-4), Buildings Construction Contracts (91-8 and 92-8), Buildings, Maintenance and Repair Contracts (91-10 and 92-10), Maintenance and Repair Contracts (Bridges) (91-40 and 92-40), and Professional Service Contracts (91-61 and 92-61). All the records contained in this series were created while the PJC&CI was under the jurisdiction of the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority from 1976 to 1998.

Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (Canada) : By way of Chapter 58 of the Statutes of 1924, the Montreal Harbour Commissioners were authorized to build, own, maintain, manage operate and use the Jacques Cartier Bridge for general traffic (including tramways) across the St. Lawrence. The Bridge opened to traffic in 1930 as a toll bridge. By Cabinet decision 336-76-RD of August 5, 1976, the National Harbours Board was directed to transfer administration, management and control of the Jacques Cartier Bridge (and the Champlain Bridge) to The St. Lawrence Seaway Authority.

The National Harbours Board was the agency responsible for the planning, construction and operation of the Champlain Bridge which was originally referred to as the `Nun's Island Bridge'. The Bridge opened to traffic on June 28, 1962, and provided for a multi-lane highway crossing of the St. Lawrence River and the Seaway between Montreal and the South Shore of the St. Lawrence River.

The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The St. Lawrence Seaway Authority, a Schedule III Part I Crown Corporation of the Financial Administration Act. It was incorporated under the Canada Business Corporations Act on November 3, 1978 and is subject to The St. Lawrence Seaway Authority Act pursuant to Section 27. The fixed assets were acquired from the National Harbours Board on December 1 of that year and the Corporation assumed the responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the Bridges and the section of the Bonaventure Autoroute owned by the Government of Canada. As directed by T.B. 759687, 27 September 1978, the new company was instructed to make every effort to make the bridges self-sufficient.

The Officers of the Corporation are also the officers of The St. Lawrence Seaway Authority. In accordance with the provisions of section 152(1) of The Financial Administration Act, the Corporation reports to the Government through the Minister of Transport Canada.
