The fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Harry Sutherland during his lifetime through his involvement with the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada, as an international judge and as a philatelist. The fonds has been arranged by the archivist into four series based on the relevant organization or sphere of activity. The series are: (1) Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC), (2) Federación Interamericana de Filatelia (FIAF), (3) Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP), and Sutherland's (4) Personal collection and personal records.

Sutherland, Harry, 1930-2006 : Harry Sutherland was born and educated in Toronto, Ontario, where he practiced corporate law. Sutherland began collecting stamps at the age of five, with his main collecting interests including: Local Issues of Chinese Treaty Posts (Shanghai and German Naval), Mail of WWI, Yugoslavia, and Montenegro. He attended and exhibited at many international exhibitions and received numerous high awards for his collections. Sutherland joined the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC) in 1950, became director in 1957 and served the Society as President (1967-1979), Secretary of the Board of Directors, Chairman of the Arbitration Committee, and Director of International Affairs. He was director of the Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP),(1976-1981), and was the chief Canadian delegate. In 1974 Harry Sutherland became Vice-President of the Federación Interamericana de Filatelia (FIAF) and then President in 1975. Sutherland was involved in numerous philatelic organizations: he was a Fellow of the RPSC and the Royal Philatelic Society of London, a member of the British North America Philatelic Society (BNAPS), as well as a member of the Philatelic Specialists Society of Canada. Mr. Sutherland was an international judge for philatelic exhibitions. He also served the Vincent G. Greene Philatelic Research Foundation by way of supervising the publication of books and the creation of the library. In 1991 he was invited to sign the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists, and the year before received the FIAF medal for meritorious service to philately. Finally in 2002, he received the Alfred Lichtenstein award from the Collectors Club of New York. Harry Sutherland died February 14, 2006 at the age of 75.
