Fonds consists of papers created or received by Richard D. Robertson mainly relating to his career as a member of the RCMP as well as to his personal experiences in England, the U.S., and Canada. Material includes diaries he kept while on duty as a guard during the 1939 Royal Visit and as Chief of Security for the Canadian contingent at the 1954 Geneva Conference. There are also reminiscences of his early days as a young constable in New Brunswick in the 1930s, his experience as "Boy Farm Learner" in Guelph, Ontario (a type of immigration scheme for British boys), and a semi-fictionalized account of his time working on a Mississippi plantation owned by relatives. Transcripts of many of these documents are also included.

Robertson, Richard D., 1909-1977 : Richard Dale Robertson was born in 1909 in Liverpool England. He immigrated with his family to Mississippi in 1912, but returned to England in 1915. Soon thereafter, he left school to work on a farm, then worked for two years (1926-1928) as a junior lawyer's clerk in Liverpool. He arrived in Canada in 1928 as a "Boy Farm Learner" (a program for placing British youth on Canadian farms, akin to emigration schemes for younger "Home Children"). He left the program to work on a U.S. cotton farm from 1930 to1932, returning to Canada for further farm work.

Robertson joined the RCMP in 1932 and rose through the ranks from Constable to Corporal in 1941 and Sergeant in 1944, before finally being promoted Staff Sergeant in 1948. Robertson was appointed as Security Chief for the Canadian delegation at the Geneva Conference in 1954. He was discharged from the RCMP in 1958, worked in other positions until his retirement in 1971 and died in 1977 in Ottawa. He married Phyllis Vaughan of Moncton, New Brunswick in 1940. The couple had three children.
