Canada. Indian Affairs Branch. Athabaska Agency : In February 1911 an agent was first appointed to administer the bands located in the northeastern portion of Treaty 8. Included within the mandate of this Fort Smith Agency were the bands located along the Athabaska River and its tributaries (the Janvier, Ft. McMurray and Ft. McKay bands), the Cree and Chipewyan bands at Fort Chipewyan, the people located at Fond du Lac and Stony Rapids on Lake Athabasca, the Ft. Smith and Ft. Fitzgerald people, and the Hay River and Ft. Resolution bands located at Great Slave Lake. Responsibility for the latter two bands was later transferred to another agency. The Ft. Smith Agency headquarters was moved in 1924 to Ft. McMurray and the agency name changed accordingly. In 1932 it was re-located to Ft. Chipewyan and the agency came to be known as Athabaska. In 1949 responsibility for the Janvier and Ft. McMurray bands was transfered to the Edmonton Agency. These bands were later re-united administratively with the other Athabaska Agency bands after the Athabaska Agency and the Saddle Lake Agency were united administratively in 1967 as the Saddle Lake / Athabaska District. Responsibility for the two bands located in Saskatchewan (Fond du Lac and Stony Rapids) was transferred to an agency in Saskatchewan Region..
