Series consists of records kept by Carl Schaefer documenting the exhibition and sale of his artworks, and other financial records.

Included are four record books kept by Carl Schaefer, two documenting in detail the sale of his works of art and two documenting their exhibition histories. The entries on exhibitions document the venues of exhibitions, the titles of works shown, their size and medium, and prices asked; the entries on sales record the names and addresses of buyers, the titles of the works sold, their size and medium, the date the work was painted and the sale prices. The books included a great deal of loose material which has been filed in the series in separate file folders. Included among this loose material are letters from collectors. There are also some diary notes dating from 1938, recording a trip to New York, exchanging sketches with A.Y. Jackson and sending a painting to a Great Lakes Show.

Additional material includes a detailed rental agreement relating to Schaefer's year in Vermont, 1940; correspondence and consignment records from his dealers The Downstairs Gallery and Roberts Gallery, 1959-1990; notes and records on his exhibitions and sales, documenting his dealings with both commercial galleries and artists' associations, 1934-1943; and receipts and invoices documenting the purchase of artists' supplies, framing costs, membership in artists' associations, etc., including Douglas Duncan invoices, an invoice on Carl Schaefer letterhead to Lawren Harris, a note from photographer Roy Kemp, and invoices from English and Warrener, Brigdens, The Art Metropole, Artists' Supply Co., and others,1931-1942.
