Although most materials included in this series have been processed and accordingly may be ordered through their volume number, materials found in accession (BAN) 2008-00585-2 require conservation treatment and have not been brought to permanent status. The records in this series were created and maintained by the three armed services during the Second World War. At the end of the war the records were consolidated and transferred to the control of the War Service Records Division of the Department of Veterans' Affairs. In 1971, the then Public Archives of Canada took over the responsibility for administering the files of retired Canadian service personnel, including those who served during the Second World War. The records were first identified as archival in 1985. A separate Records Disposition Authority covering the records in this series was granted in 1999.
