Series consists of records created and/or maintained by the Commissioners of the Transcontinental Railway. The records include the following: minute books and indexes, 1904-1915 (RG36-1, Vols. 1-25); correspondence from the Office of the Secretary, 1904-1920 (RG36-1, Vols. 26-30); correspondence relating to files and contracts from the Chief Engineers' Office, 1904-1917. (RG36-1, Vols. 31-33); records from the Engineers' Office, 1911-1916 and the Bridge Engineer's Office (RG36-1, Vol. 34); records from the Office of the Chief Engineer of the Western Division of the National Transcontinental Railway and General Consulting Engineer to the Government, 1907-1917 (RG36-1, Vols. 35-37); files of legal opinions and court cases from the Law Clerks Office, 1908-1921 (RG36-1, Vols. 38-40); files and claims for Quebec (in alphabetical order) from the Right of Way and Lease Agent, 1913-1923 (RG36-1, Vols. 41-49); newspaper clippings (RG36-1, Vol. 49) and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings (RG36-1, Vol. 50).

Architectural drawings of RG30M 1997-00243-4 consist of one ledger entitled, "Commissioners of the Transcontinental Railway. Bridge Book" for contracts of excavations and foundations for various buildings including stations, coaling plants, freight sheds, section houses, etc, for Districts B,C,D & E, National Transcontinental Railway. Ledger consists of an estimated 800 sheets of data and scale drawings of the excavation and foundation work done, and dated from 1912-1914. There is an untitled Sheet A, Sheet B "Sketch,Plan and Profile", Sheet C "Pile Driving Record" and Sheet D "Detail of Piles and Bill of Material". The plans are checked (final) copies which have been signed off by respective division, resident and district engineers.

Commissioners of the Transcontinental Railway (Canada) : Under an Act of Parliament (3 Edward VII, 71, 24 October 1903), provision was made for the construction of a National Transcontinental Railway. This railway was to be constructed as two divisions, one, the Eastern Division, from Moncton to Winnipeg and one, the Western Division between Winnipeg and the Pacific Ocean. The construction was to be supervised by a board of commissioners forming "The Commissioners of the Transcontinental Railway". The Commissioners of the Transcontinental Railway were F.B. Wade (Chairman), Young, Reid and Brunet. The first meeting was held on the 29 August 1904. By Order in Council (P.C. 115, 20 January 1923) authorized by federal statute 13 1917, the National Transcontinental Railway was entrusted to the Canadian National Railway Company for management and operation.

As part of the process of acquiring land for the Eastern Division of the National Transcontinental Railway, it was necessary to expropriate land and transfer ownership to the Commissioners of the Transcontinental Railway. In 1912, the construction of the National Transcontinental Railway (NTR) (Eastern Division), and its operation until completed and leased to the GTPR, was placed under the control of one commissioner, R.W. Leonard (NA, P.C. 807, April 4, 1912). In 1914, after the failure of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Company to take over the line by lease, as agreed, the Minister of Railways and Canals was authorized to act as Commissioner of the line and to operate it as a government railway (S.C. 1914[1]. c.43). By 1919, the minister's role was expanded to operate the lines and properties of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Company and its constituents and subsidiaries as Receiver (P.C. 1919-517[March 7]).
